Le mot batuque vient du portugais bater, battre, frapper. Le batuque de Santiago est attaché aux réjouissances des naissances, du baptême, et surtout aux cérémonies de mariage. Ce sont en général des femmes qui marquent le rythme, tchabeta, soit en claquant des mains, soit en frappant sur des pagnes roulés et placés entre leurs cuisses. Finaçon est un art partagé par très peu d’initiés qui, en confiant leurs mots de sagesse au support d’une mélopée, enseignent les membres de leur communauté. Ces réflexions, inspirées par la destinée humaine ou dictées par la pression d’événements subis, émanent de personnalités paysannes, souvent illettrées, dont les prouesses inventives étonnent. Ce surpassement est parfois mis sur le compte d’une relation privilégiée avec le divin. La bouche de la « prophétesse » délivre ainsi des paroles d’un ordre supérieur pour le profit de la société.

Em geral, são mulheres, batuqueiras, que marcam o ritmo, tchabeta, ou batendo as mãos ou batendo em tangas enroladas e colocadas entre as coxas. Finaçon é uma arte partilha por uma minoria de iniciados que, ao remeter as suas palavras de sapiência no suporte de uma melopeia, ensinam os membros da comunidade. Estas reflexões inspiradas pelo destino humano ou ditadas pela pressão de acontecimentos vividos, provêm de personalidades campesinas, muitas vezes analfabetas, cujas proezas inventivas espantam. Este excesso é, por vezes, tido como sendo uma relação privilegiada com o ser divino. Da boca da profeta saiem assim palavras de uma ordem superior para o bem da sociedade.

The name batuque is related to the Portuguese verb bater., to beat. In Santiago, the batuque is a form of entertainment linked to births, christenings and especially weddings. The space is defined by a circle of beaters, and in fact, those giving the beat or tchabeta, by clapping their hands or beating a rolled-up loincloth which is held between their thighs, are generally women. Finaçon is an art which is mastered by very few initiates, who provide words of wisdom with the support of recitative, in order to teach members of their community. Although these reflections either inspired by human destiny or imposed by the pressure of events, come from unpolished, often illiterate individuals, their inventiveness and creativity are startling. This means of surpassing themselves is sometimes ascribed to their extraordinary relationship to the divine. Thus the « prophetess » may utter words which came from a superior level of reality, delivering her message for the benefit of society.
